“His name was heard up and down West Broadway, from Pat’s Trattoria, where the lunch crowd was picking up sandwiches, to Croke Park, a bar, oddly enough, also known as Whitey’s, where his mug shot loomed on televisions above the handful of patrons drinking their morning beers.”

“The market is tapping into a new and unique source of information as a means of making trading decisions. And the reason social media data is so exciting is because it offers an unparalleled view into the emotions, opinions and choices of millions of users. A stream of data this size, with this depth and range, has never really existed before in a format this immediate and accessible. And that access is changing how our clients analyze the world and make trades.” Financial Markets in the Age of Social Media « Gnip Blog

Rhyming Dictionary API rhymebrain.com

Using advanced artificial intelligence techniques, RhymeBrain figures out how to pronounce a word even if it has never seen it before. RhymeBrain then compares it to the 2.6 million words in its database to find ones that sound similar. Finally, it sorts them so that the best rhymes appear first, using our RhymeRankTM system.

“MongoDB uses 1 BFGL (big f***ing global lock) for separating reads and writes. That is, when one thread is writing, no one else can do a read or write. However, you can have multiple reads going on at the same time (when no writes are going on). This is fairly standard. What is surprising is that there is a single global lock across collections! That means, you currently don’t get concurrency across write operations on different collections. That said, the 10gen team said that improving concurrency is their main goal for the rest of the year. The situation should improve with the 2.0 release (which is supposed to come out soon).” Ten things I didn’t know about MongoDB | Becoming a better systems builder

“To price data properly, as we discussed before, it’s key to keep in mind the true scarcities at hand. If your data is timely, the scarcity of freshness is what you can price on. If your data is large, the scarcity of convenience will allow you to charge for the storage or quick access to specific portions of the data, as in an API. If the accuracy of your data is paramount, then the scarcity of trust affords you the ability to charge for putting your name behind the quality of your data.” 5 Important Factors for Pricing Data in the Information (Overload) Age
“Nintendo and Apple stand alone at the top in finding new ways for consumer technology to entertain and inform. And that is because both companies actually put technology second in their design process. What comes first is the consumer experience; for these companies technology is useful only as it allows everyday people to have new experiences.” Nintendo Unveils Its Video Game Successor to the Wii - NYTimes.com
“Over the past few years, I have engaged in several inappropriate conversations conducted over Twitter, Facebook, e-mail and occasionally on the phone with women I had met online,” Mr. Weiner said.”

Seriously, congressman is Tumblr not good enough for your perversions.  We are based in your home state - in your hometown!!!! I wish you had showed a little bit of loyalty when pursuing your naughtiness.   But I guess loyalty is kind of the issue with you.

Projects Use Phone Data to Track Public Services - NYTimes.com nytimes.com

Densebrain’s project works by taking note of which cellphone tower a phone is communicating with. It then looks for disruptions in service followed by significant changes in location. If a phone located near Times Square suddenly loses service and reconnects at Prince Street and Broadway 15 minutes later, then it has almost certainly traveled there using the N or R trains. This type of data, when taken from large numbers of phones and analyzed algorithmically, could give an accurate look at the performance of the entire subway system in real time.

heatmap.js | HTML5 Canvas Heatmap Library patrick-wied.at

heatmap.js is a JavaScript library that can be used to generate web heatmaps with the html5canvas element based on your data. Heatmap instances contain a store in order to colorize the heatmap based on relative data, which means if you’re adding only a single datapoint to the store it will be displayed as the hottest(red) spot, then adding another point with a higher count, it will dynamically recalculate. The heatmaps are fully customizable - your welcome to choose your own color gradient, change it’s opacity, datapoint radius and many more. The library is dual-licensed under the MIT and the Beerware license, feel free to use it in your projects.

“We didn’t have a massive short against the housing market,” Mr. Blankfein testified at a Congressional hearing in 2010. It was a sentiment echoed in various public statements that year. The Senate committee took a different view. The Congressional report noted the phrase “net short” appeared more than 3,400 times in Goldman documents related to the mortgage market.” Goldman Receives Subpoena Over Crisis Report - NYTimes.com
